Lawmaker proposes electric signs on stretch of I-75 where deadly crash occurred

Smoke from burning trailers at the scene of a multi-vehicle wreck on Interstate 75 at Paynes Prairie on Sunday, Jan. 29, 2012, south of Gainesville, Fla.

Following news that there are no warning signs on a stretch of Interstate 75 near Gainesville where 11 people recently died in a fog and smoke shrouded crash, a Republican lawmaker from the area plans to introduce legislation to require them.

Rep. Keith Perry, R-Gainesville, plans to file an amendment to an omnibus transportation bill (HB 1399) that would require electronic signs in the area near Paynes Prairie to warn motorists when there’s danger. The area is particularly vulnerable to fog because it’s low-lying.

A chain reaction crash in the morning of Jan. 29 along the interstate killed 11 and injured 18. WESH TV in Orlando reported this week that unlike many other areas along Florida’s interstates, that stretch of highway has no electronic messaging.
