Greatest hits, misses, winners and losers from GOP debate

/ Thursday, January 26, 2012

JACKSONVILLE

Newt Gingrich headed into Thursday night’s debate needing to re-assert himself as the pugnacious upstart ready to take on the political establishment, whether they are Republicans or Democrats.

The debate format — which has become the defining element of the 2012 presidential campaign — offered Gingrich a way to counter-punch the pummeling he is taking from Mitt Romney’s well-financed television advertising campaign in Florida ahead of Tuesday’s primary.

But Romney proved a very effective counter-puncher and seemed to knock Gingrich off his normally aggressive stride.

Thursday’s debate gave Romney not only a chance to fend off another line of Gingrich’s attacks but also the opportunity to show his passion and energy for taking on a sitting Democratic president in the fall.

BEST PUNCHES

Romney was the most aggressive candidate throughout the two-hour debate, repeatedly taking shots at Gingrich, with some of the most effective continuing to tie the former speaker to his $1.6 million consulting contract with Freddie Mac, the troubled mortgage agency. Romney said Gingrich’s decision to work for the agency was “an enormous mistake.”

“I think, instead, we should have had a whistle-blower and not horn-tooter,” Romney said.

Gingrich had fewer effective shots, but did tie Romney’s investments to the housing crisis in Florida. Gingrich said Romney had a financial interest in Goldman Sachs “which is today foreclosing on Floridians.”

“So maybe Gov. Romney in the spirit of openness should tell us how much money he’s made off of how many households that have been foreclosed by his investments,” Gingrich said.

But while Romney and Gingrich were slugging it out, former Pennsylvania Sen. rick Santorum proved himself a strong opponent, taking on both the front-runners at once.

“The problem with the answers from Congressman Gingrich and Gov. Romney is that, well, they didn’t always say what they’re saying,” Santorum said.

He cited Romney’s support of the Massachusetts health care plan, which he called a “government-run” system similar to the federal health care plan. He noted Gingrich had historically supported a mandate to have insurance.

Romney eviscerated Gingrich’s plan to put a space colony on the moon.

“If I had a business executive come to me and say they wanted to spend a few hundred billion dollars to put a colony on the moon, I’d say, “You’re fired,” Romney said.

The moon issue drew one of the many effective lines in the debate from Rep. Ronn Paul. “Well, I don’t think we should go to the moon,” Paul said. “I think we maybe should send some politicians up there.”

BEST COUNTER-PUNCHES

Romney adroitly beat back Gingrich’s claim that the former governor was “anti-immigrant” and was ready to deport grandmothers.

He called the charge “repulsive” and “the kind of over-the-top rhetoric that has characterized American politics too long. “You know, our problem is not 11 million grandmothers,” Romney said. “Our problem is 11 million people getting jobs that many Americans, legal immigrants, would like to have.”

Romney also dismissed Gingrich’s charge that he had invested in Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, noting those investments had been made as part of a blind trust that he did not technically control.

He then turned to Gingrich and asked: “Have you checked your own investments? You also have investments through mutual funds that also invest in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.”

Gingrich offered a spirited defense of his plan to revive the American space program, brushing off Romney’s claim that he was traveling from state to state making big promises. “I thought we were a country where one of the purposes of candidates going around was to actually learn about the states they campaigned in and actually be responsive to the needs of the states they campaign in,” Gingrich said.

He also said the moon project could be carried out if federal spending priorities were adjusted.

“It is possible to do the right things in the right order to make this a bigger, richer, more exciting country,” Gingrich said. “You don’t just have to be cheap everywhere.”

MISSED SHOTS

In one of the biggest flubs of the debate, Romney said he had nothing to do with a radio ad that claimed Gingrich had called Spanish the “language of the ghetto.”

“I doubt that’s my ad,” Romney said.

But CNN moderator Wolf Blitzer later read from the transcript of the ad, noting it ended with “I’m Mitt Romney and I approved this ad.”

In the debate, Gingrich retreated from his harsh attacks on Romney’s “self-deportation” comments, which he had labeled on the campaign trail as an “Obama-level fantasy.”

“I actually agree that self-deportation will occur if you’re single,” Gingrich said, although he said it was highly unlikely more established illegal immigrants would want to leave the country.

LOW BLOWS

Romney didn’t like Santorum’s detailed and passionate criticism of his role in creating a health care plan for Massachusetts.

“First of all, it’s not worth getting angry about,” Romney said brusquely.

Gingrich refused to back down from his charge that Romney was the most “anti-immigrant” candidate. “I think, of the four of us, yes,” Gingrich said.

WINNERS AND LOSERS

Romney was the clear winner of the debate. Not by a knockout, but certainly on points. Repeatedly throughout the debate, he was the aggressor and used the forum to dismantle a number of a charges that Gingrich has been hurling at him.

Santorum again proved himself a skilled advocate in a scenario where he trails the two front-runners in the polls and doesn’t have the resources to match their campaigns. It was he, not Gingrich, who provided the most stinging criticism of Romney.

If Gingrich continues to falter, it may be Santorum who will be the beneficiary in the coming primaries.

I think Ron Paul clearly won the debate. Rather than bickering like the other candidates, Paul addressed the issues and I felt like I was being educated each time he spoke. With the others, I felt I was being deeducated and brainwashed with fear mongering every time they spoke.

Romney comes across as a bitter, spoiled man and frankly why does he have a swiss bank account? I believe his blind trust investments are also suspicious. The two of them Romney and Newt are taking away fom important issues by their petty attacks on each other. Rick Santorum had the best night in my opinion and was right on about Romney care. Mitt couldn’t defend himself against Santorums attacks and I think Obama will destroy him on the health care issue.

Ron Paul represents the real America. As he tries to remove the blinders off our eyes the media is struggling to keep the blinders on by supporting the three stooges. Watching this GOP race is like sitting in a kindergarten with Ron Paul as the teacher.

This article missed the consistency performance of Ron Paul. His answers were completely consistent with his prior voting record and statements made over the last 30 years. All of the other candidates statements were at odds with their history. Not one word about “Flip/Flopping” by the others.

I like how Ron Paul was barely mentioned in this article despite the fact that CNN declared him the “WINNER” of the entire debate. Just another attempt to shut him out and prevent the people of America from making an informed decision this election cycle.

Lloyd, your journalism it quite pathetic and you bias towards certain candidates does a great disservice to the community.

Think our 16 trillion and counting debt is a problem? Ron Paul is the only candidate proposing real cuts, not just decreases in proposed future increases of the budget.

In other words the other three candidates are simply planning on slowing the increase of our debt but not actually reducing it. Simply put ONLY Ron Paul will reduce the debt.

SERIOUSLY how do you people sleep at night???? There were four candidates in the debate last night. You Lloyd, should be ashamed of yourself, calling yourself a journalist!!

A true debate would ask the same question to each candidate so we could learn each candidates position on the given topic. Instead what we see are certain candidates getting nice questions while others get crap or in worse cases certain candidates getting only 89 sec of air time.

Ahh you should pay attention to what Obama is doing… I’ll give you a hint though he’s pretty much doing exactly what Bush did.

Ron Paul is not focusing on FL. I think he’ll do ok but for the most part Ron Paul is doing well with the younger (18-30 year olds) internet users. FL has a large older population that gets most of their info from the news and as I’m sure you’ve noticed the mainstream media is not friendly towards Ron Paul.

For him, this will be a marathon not a sprint race. He will continue to pick up delegates and do well. In case you don’t know delegates are what matter. AND Santorum and Newt are not on the ballot of various states! In other words they will not be able to get any delegates from over 500 delegates worth of states.

What is the matter with you?? Are you SO TERRIFIED of Dr Ron Paul and his positions that you cannot give him fair and unbiased analysis in your reporting? You, and other like-minded, so-called “journalists” should be ashamed of yourselves. But you are probably not. Maybe when you are all wearing the potato sack of discredit you finally get the message.

Ron Paul owned the debate he is way to smart to get into a newt obamny type back and forth he took the time he had used it to say what HE will do and when a candidate tried to stretch the truth the good Dr. was there to set them straight and yes Dr. Paul you where right last night you are polling better than any of them against Obama most media and newspapers will not share the truth but don’t worry Dr. Paul we will.

As is usually the case, Ron Paul won this debate with common sense, reasonable, Constitutionally and economically sound answers. Even the television news commentators had good things to say about Congressman Paul.

I’m surprised that your article barely mentions Ron Paul. In my view, Ron Paul discussed the issues in an honest and direct manner – devoid of the all unnecessary political pandering that the status quo seems to spew.

Lloyd Dunkelberger appears to write an article to further his own political agenda as he excludes the clear winner of the debate, Ron Paul. When the media and the press become public relations instruments for the government then we do not have a free press but totalitarianism. Mr. Dunkelberger must be somehow profiting from his public relations and biased reporting and therefore is a disgrace to the profession and a free American press. While Mr. Dunkelberger and the Herald Tribune is a part of the problem, Ron Paul is the solution for citizens whose rights are being eroded by this kind of behavior.

The media must really be afraid of Ron Paul. So afraid that they actually fear to mention his name. How can Mr. Dinkelberger write a discriptive story about the activity of four candidates on a stage and completely forget to mention Ron Paul. It must be fear. I hope he didn’t soil his pants.

A respectable report on the debate would have made mention of both Rick Santorum and Dr. Ron Paul, even as to express that on Paul was simply not present. I find it despicable that CNN reported the Newt Gingrich story (about his infidelity) all day long on the day before the South Carolina vote, but did not mention Dr. Paul the entire day! What is the problem with the media? Are the owners only allowing them to report on the jokers so that Obama will have a landslide?

I’m between the candidates right now with a lean toward the constitutionalist, Ron Paul, but liking the things I’m hearing from Newt and the way he’s worked at uplifting the whole campaign to one where the opponent is BO not the other nominees. Clearly Romney did a better job last night than previously, as did Santorum. But to hardly mention Ron Paul, who makes more sense than the other three in many areas like quitting our role as global police force and allowing us to return to non-governmental health care, is a travesty. The man is incredibly bright, focused, and has led his constituency proactively for more years than most of us have been alive.

Bad Dunkelberger!

I thought Ron Paul had a great performance. Even the commentators thought he did very well. I read this article and was surprised to see that he wasn’t mentioned, as if he wasn’t even there! Just to be sure, I search the page with the browser find and the only place it was found was in the comments. Wow! How obviously biased can you get? This work is not worthy of a “news” organization and makes it very clear that bias is your intent.

I believe Ron Paul made more points than one about the moon. You couldn’t menton his level headed speaking on our economy or the fact that he wouold like to talk to other countries instead of attacking them or installing a government that is tailored to our needs instead of the government that the countries people need. or his view of government run healthcare.

I loved it when Ron Paul said, that he really was not all that interested in the BaCK AND FORTH, that was going on between Gingrich and Romney, that was wonderful and it just proves that Ron Paul is only interested in that which counts.
His message is resonating loud and clear and the drivel goes right by him.
It was definitely a winning evening for Ron Paul in this debate.

Nothing is mentioned about the endless war/endless debt/endless spending/endless money-printing issues we should be hearing debated by these candidates, let’s just waste time talking about “moon issue” nonsense…this article is as absurd as watching CNN.

Did Lloyd watch the same debate and post debate analysis that I did?
In their own, final analysis, Romney will use his experience to “get America right”, Newt wants to leave a legacy for himself, Santorum thinks he’s the only one who can get the job done and rah, rah, rah America from all three. The good Dr Paul, just wants to follow the Constitution, be responsible with sound money and mind our own business.
He’s not in it for himself. He’s not going to fix America. He’s going to get the Federal Gvmt out of our way so we can fix it ourselves!
That’s REAL hope and change.
Even CNN said Paul won the debate… Will wonders never cease?!

Once again Mr. Paul has expressed the sentiments of the numerous, yet relatively powerless, majority of freedom-loving American sovereign citizens with consistency, accuracy and from an elevated position separate and apart from the lowly bickering and childlike infighting endemic among politicians. This disagreeable disputation, quibbling and antagonistic wrangling among purported mature adults who espouse a desire to become the next American president does nothing to endear the candidates to the electorate nor to foster any confidence in either their sincerity or competency. Mr. Ron Paul, however, has consistently presented a very realistic, truthful and down-to-earth picture of what actually happens within our national government.

It is evident that the characteristics of independence, self-reliance and self-determination Mr. Paul speaks of, and ascribes to We, The People, are viewed as either archaic, odd or threatening (perhaps all three) to the collectivists (media included) and our would-be controllers so it comes as no surprise that Mr. Dunkelberger’s account of Thursday night’s debate is a transparent and clumsy attempt to minimize Mr. Paul’s message. Mr. Dunkelberger, with this ill-conceived and lopsided critique of Thursday’s debate, illustrates quite clearly to me that he grovels among his undeserving peers in the wallow of collectivism and unthinking fealty to his controllers.

Ron Paul wins the debate just by showing up!! Now that there are only 4 candidates on the stage Ron Paul distinguishes himself even more clearly from the other three. The other three (Romney, Gingrich, and Santorum) are interchangeable with eachother and Obama. All of them have advocated in big government spending, socialism, and cronyism.

There is only one true conservative Republican in the race and that is Dr. Ron Paul! Wake up Tea Party and 912. Learn the real records of the phony conservatives that you are supporting. Ron Paul 2012!

Ron Paul was clearly the winner. If Romney is getting “points” for doing what any dog can do in defending himself over the territory he has marked, then why bother having any kind of point system at all. Does Paul not deserve more points than anyone, because he does not have these scathing attacks directed at him? This is not a high school brawl where the winner is decided by who throws the best punch. Rather, it should be decided by who must defend themselves the least for past acts or transgressions.

Will the Tea Partiers stick with their values of Constitutionally-limited government, fiscal responsibility and free market enterprise?

Ron Paul is the only logical candidate.

Thanks for being part of the medias attempt to black out Ron Paul and try to lead us to voting for YOUR candidates of choice. It shows great character (NOT!). I am so sick of what’s going on. Only ONE candidate believes in the constitution, protection of our freedoms, human rights, getting government out of our life, creating a peaceful world, eliminating unnecessary wars, ending failed govt departments, closing military bases that are unnecessary, reducing taxes, reducing the debt, reducing over regulation of business and property owners. The other candidates want more wars and useless spending and want the public to believe their lies to support their overspending. I was in Tampa last week to support Paul in the debate. The streets were lines with THOUSANDS of Paul supporters. The media never covered it. Santorum and the others pulled up in their 1/2 million dollar busses with blacked out windows. Paul rode through in a chevy SUV with the window down waiving. The other 3 are shameful spoiled brats who name call and whine like babies. We need an american who believes in the principles that our founding fathers set for us as president and the news media needs to shut up and report ALL the news, fairly, honestly and without censorship & spin. Regan left the democratic party when they began to embrace big government. Now Republicans have joined in the game and people like you are helping them. Lets get our country back. Remember “We the people” or have you forgotten what it means. The experts agree that censorship works…just ask them Hitler, Castro, CNN, FOX…..get the picture?

This article by “Dinkelburger” was just another example of how bias the media is against Ron Paul. I thought that journalists were supposed to report the facts. The fact that you mention Gingrich and Romney over and over again is sickening. In the “debates” they sound like two kids arguing.

Ron Paul is the only candidate that supports the constitution, personal liberties, taking care of our own backyard rather than policing the world. The other three candidates are only more of the same crap that we’ve been living with in Washington for a long long time.

RON PAUL was the best on the stage last night! If this writer actually watched the debate, which seems unlikely due to his ridiculous spin of how he writes, he would have seen Ron Paul had the BEST ANSWERS, the MOST CREDABLE SOLUTIONS, the MOST ON-POINT DIAGNOSES of problems facing America, and the MOST HONEST guy on the stage about how to handle things in the interest of REAL-AMERICANS! There is no doubt, RON PAUL WILL BE OUR NEXT PRESIDENT without the help of the American Media Elite. Did we watch the same debate last night because clearly, Ron Paul was the winner. His answers were intelligent and articulate. He didn’t get caught up in arguing about petty, trivial things. How many times did we hear the other candidates say “Dr. Paul is right…” We’re starting to see the other candidates run on platforms that Ron Paul has been running on since day one. He has always been the most consistent candidate and your article just adds to the problem that we see with the Media. As a journalist, you are supposed to be the biggest critic of the Government. That is why it is the only profession that is protected by the constitution, because you are supposed to be an additional check and balance, not the Governments loudspeaker.

Hey Dunkelberger…..Who are you trying to kid? Your reporting skills should earn you a place in the unemployment line. But, then again, you’ll be there soon enough when anyone other than Ron Paul becomes the next President.

It is a sad state of affairs when the average American spends more time and effort picking out a new television than he does researching information about the next president.

Ron Paul appeals to American’s with good common sense, who are willing to search out and learn about the candidates and the issues.
We don’t vote based on the opinions of news commentators, or vote depending on the candidate’s appearance. But luckily for the other three stooges running in this election some people vote for the candidate who is endorsed by their favorite celebrity, or who the news networks say are ‘winning’, or by how many signs they see on the roadway, or they vote for the candidate who looks like a ‘polished movie version’ of a politician. Oh, you poor clueless Americans.
This is our last chance before this country heads into a severe economic nightmare from which we will not be waking up. If you are not filthy rich, good luck affording to live at all in the next few years.
We are in our 50′s and we support Ron Paul. He appeals to more than just the youth. Ron Paul is the one man that actually cares about this country and it’s future.

And by the way…..I am a woman, and I may be the first to say this, but I’m going to say it anyway….
It ticks me off that some women vote for a president like they were choosing a husband, instead of a president. What the hell is with that? To them I say, ‘wake up’ and do your homework.

This message is addressed to the employers of Lloyd Dunkelberger. Of course Mr. Dunkelberger has the right to express his opinion in his writings published by the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. The new ownership can employee anyone they want, to say whatever they wish to be printed in their publication. I’d strongly suggest that the ownership look at the words expressed today by former General Electric CEO Jack Welsh regarding Ron Paul supporters. Mr. Welsh accurately describes Ron Paul supporters as “impassioned activists and anything but (Republican) party regulars.” These U.S. citizens feel that Dr. Paul’s campaign has not received a fair portrayal by the mainstream media. If the Herald-Tribune continues to allow its’ employees to not practice journalism by the book, but actively slant their coverage of the race for the Republican nomination of the President of the United States, it will result in a massive public relations debacle. This of course is by no means a threat, it simply states the obvious. The recent overwhelming response to various Herald-Tribune articles deemed by supporters of Dr. Paul to be biased, non factual reporting will result in these “activists” turning their attention to the Herald-Tribune. I’m sure you will welcome the attention for a while, as this sort of thing brings focus to your publication, but the effect will be chilling on your bottom line when all is said and done. http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2012/01/27/welch-be-nice-to-paul-we-need-his-supporters/

What a worthless, non informative, unfair & totally biased article. It’s an embarrasment to even have written it. Really Dunkel?! For God’s sake, this is a race to elect our next President NOT the next “Rocky Balboa” movie! You are a disgrace to Americans & a joke to the reporting community to have written this article in this manner! Like you are talking about a Boxing match!
Where did you get your reporting tactics from…FAUX News?! You need to go back to journalist school because you don’t have a clue about truthful reporting! If you did, half of this article would be on how Dr. Ron Paul “stole” the show with his Perfect answers or how he “knocked out” ALL of the other opponents, if you wanted to use your “boxing match” reporting tactic. How dare you join the rest of the corrupt, media scum bags & by “ignoring” & “blacking out” Dr. Paul purposely?!
How much did you get paid to do that and who ordered you to do that? Your game is totally obvious & disgusting in the same sense. And to think that your title is: Capital Bureau Chief! With THAT type of disgraceful reporting, you should be demoted to Newspaper Route Delivery Technician. If you really care about your job & your readers, you should re-write this entire article CORRECTLY & UNBIASEDLY….with EVERYTHING what Dr. Paul REALLY said, not a “one line zinger”! Be a “Leader” NOT a “Follower”.

Two “frontrunners” bickering about who is the more obnoxious and unprincipled.

When the media deem it necessary to mention Ron Paul (the only candidate with cojones and a plan) they have to preface it with “of course, he’s not electable”. Well, let’s talk about electability. Gingrich has enough baggage to bring down Jesus Christ; Santorum was soundly trounced for reelection to the
Senate in his home state. And neither of those two are even on the ballot in states commanding hundreds of delegates. Romney? He’s Obama lite. Anyone who might vote for him would vote for the real Obama, If he’s the inevitable R candidate, we can only pray he’ll flip-flop and turn into Ron Paul. That’s the only way he might beat Obama. But once in office, he’d turn back into Obama.

Only Ron Paul can bring aboard the independents, libertarians, and disaffected Obamaphiles. If his own party trounces him, they will get the government they deserve – Obama for 1461 more days.

Ron Paul was right when I voted for him in 1988; and again in 2008; and he’s righter than ever today.

Number of times Newt Gingrich’s name appears in this article: 27
Number of times Mitt Romney’s name appears in this article: 27
Number of times Rick Santorum’s name appears in this article: 5
Number of times Ron Paul’s name appears in this article: 2

Hmmm, do you think you might be just a little biased, Mr. Dunkelberger?

You are no journalist, sir. You are another paid change agent that is out to destroy our nation while enriching yourself. Are you really so afraid of the truth that you try to distort things? I won’t be reading any more Dingleberry reports. Ron Paul is da man! Paul/Santorum in 2012.

People better wake up and smell the decay of this country. Don’t you watch the news? This country can not continue on the path its been on. Don’t you see its not working? We need to go back to what worked. Ron Paul will take us there! I am afraid for my grandchildren. Already my children don’t have the opportunities that I had in this country. What made America great has been stolen for profit. GIVE RON PAUL the attention WE deserve! Fight for your country. Stop ignoring him because WE THE PEOPLE are not. RON PAUL FOR PRESIDENT!

where in the world is ron paul in your article? Ron Paul had his best debate, yet, and even was mentioned on all the major broadcasts even though they didn’t want to mention him. Guess what? Ron Paul does better against obama then both newt and rick, and guess what? if the GOP doesn’t get act together and nominate RON PAUL, we will sink the establishment once again as the current three musketeers other than RP are much the same as Obama anyway, they just have different rhetoric during campaign season, but their records speak for themselves, wake up Mr. I’m supposed to be a journalist, wake up!!
