Vern Buchanan campaign fined $1,500

/ Friday, January 13, 2012

The Federal Election Commission has fined U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan’s congressional campaign $1,500 and ordered his staff to get more training because of paperwork errors in campaign disclosure documents.

U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan

During Buchanan’s 2010 re-election, his campaign reported collecting $27,900 in donations to retire debts accumulated during the 2010 primary, according to a negotiated settlement document made public by the FEC on Friday. But Buchanan’s campaign had no debts to retire from that campaign against underfunded Bradenton Republican Don Baldauf, according to the FEC.

Buchanan, who had more than $1 million in his campaign account at the time, easily defeated Baldauf, winning 84 percent of the vote.

Buchanan’s campaign eventually refunded the donations, but not until after repeated notices from the Federal Election Commission went unanswered.

Buchanan’s campaign treasurer Joe Gruters, who is also the Sarasota County Republican Party chairman, was also cited by the FEC for violations because of his role with the campaign.

As part of an agreement to settle the issues, Buchanan’s campaign agreed to pay the civil fine and send a representative to an FEC training seminar within a year.

William McGinley, an attorney representing Buchanan, characterized the issue as “minor bookkeeping infraction.”

Buchanan has been under investigation for other, potentially more serious matters related to the FEC, the U.S. Justice Department and the House Ethics Committee. But the paperwork issue is the first time Buchanan’s campaign has been fined directly.

In December, FEC documents for the first time reported that three of Buchanan’s former car dealerships were fined for illegally reimbursing employees for giving donations to Buchanan’s 2006 and 2008 campaigns. Buchanan and his campaign were never fined, though FEC investigators declared that Buchanan “more likely than not” violated the law.

Buchanan’s campaign acknowledged in October that the U.S. Justice Department is investigating the three-term Congressman for an undisclosed matter.

And on Dec. 22, the House Ethics Committee announced for the first time that they are reviewing another undisclosed matter related to Buchanan. The Ethics Committee is expected to rule on that matter by Feb. 6.

Oh the voters! Nevermind Buchanon, we have a bigger crook as Governor.

Stop voting for the person with the most money!
Its so obvious.
Joe Blow can go to jail for a night just because he forgot to renew his vehicle sticker registration and pay a fine, loose time from work.

Campaign Financing and Medicare/Medicaid RIP OFF artists get to pay a little tini tini tiny fine, plead the 5th and run again for re-election. None of these bastards are ever brought to justice!

This is the Voters….

Look hard at his federal campaign reports. Lots of no no’s there. Also, his ‘campaign updates’ are printed at taxpayer expense. Nothing more than campaign flyers, sent out only in a campaign year, using taxdollars designated for congressional franking privilages. We got one in the mail yesterday. The GOP pays for his actual real campaign flyers.Buchanan funnels lots of campaign cash back into his pocket, just short(or maybe not) of laundering it. Come on Vern, spend some of the campaign money on glossy 4 page flyers and leave our tax money alone. Buchanan spent more than anyone in Congress on franking privilages. Check CREW’s website for more info on that. Buchanan is a small part of a bigger scam carried on by a local and state ‘political dynasty’. He’s their do boy, not yours.

The truly sad part of all of this, is that this con artist, weasel crook, who blatantly thumbs his nose at ethics and the laws while hiding behind his official office, will still manage to buy his way back into office again next election. It’s such a sorry state of affairs that the voting public has such a short memory span. Is Vernon bringing jobs into this area? NO! Is he enriching himself at the expense of the public? YES! I nominate Vernon Buckcanyon to the position of poster child for term limits.

“Buchanan’s campaign treasurer Joe Gruters, who is also the Sarasota County Republican Party chairman…”

Say WHAT? Do you really want to know why things are screwed up? How can the chairman of the Republican Party of Sarasota County also work for a candidate? Are both positions paid? Clearly he is an officer of both entities, or was. Their tax filings (Form 990′s?) should inform us.

I want to know much more about this. I don’t understand how anyone short of a blood relative can say Vern should not be scrutinized for what has transpired.

Gruters has been up verns butt since he had an office at Sarasota ford filled with republican info. The office was never reported on taxes and it provided free cars for campaign workers. Vern and all his followers are dirty dirty dirty. Wake up srq’ Vern works for Vern, not you. He’s laughing at you.
