Sarasota Republicans vote 97-2 to oppose term limit change

/ Friday, November 11, 2011

Sarasota’s Republican Party offered a sharp rebuke of Sarasota County commissioner for considering a plan to scrap the county’s two-term limit for commissioners.

GOP leaders voted 97-2 for a resolution that calls on the county commission to abandon the idea of putting a new longer term limit proposal on the Jan. 31 ballot that would effectively get rid of the current 8-year limit.

The people voted 13 years ago to have 8 year term limits and the county commissioners – all five of whom are Republicans – need to abide by that, Sarasota Republican Party chairman Joe Gruters said.

“They need to do the right thing,” Gruters said. “We support our Republican county commissioners, but we hope they reject putting this on the ballot.”

In 1998, 68 percent of Sarasota County voters approved an amendment limiting commissioners to two four-year terms.

But those limits have been in limbo ever since 2005 when Circuit Judge Deano Economou ruled that the Florida Constitution does not allow communities to impose term limits on county commissioners.

The term limits remained in the county charter, but have been ignored.

But in August, the 4th District Court of Appeals on the Atlantic Coast ruled that Broward County term limits were constitutional. The higher court ruling means Sarasota’s limits too are likely constitutional.

The conflicting rulings has the Florida Supreme Court now looking at the issue to determine once and for all if county commissioners can be term limited like state legislators.

But before Sarasota’s limits are re-established, political allies of current county commissioners are trying to pass a new term limit law that would give future commissioners three terms. Current commissioners would not have their terms count against them, meaning they’d be eligible for three terms starting in 2012, even if they have served three or four terms previously.

Leading advocates of the longer terms are Eric Robinson, the husband of present county commissioner Christine Robinson, and Bob Waechter, a close political ally of commissioners Nora Patterson and Carolyn Mason.

Waechter said he’s not pushing the longer limits to protect Patterson or Mason. Instead, he said he worries shortened terms will shift the balance of power in the county to the unelected administrators who will have more institutional knowledge than commissioners.

“We just want to ask voters do you still feel the same way,” Waechter said.

NYC put in term limits for Mayor. The only person who they ever applied to were Giuliani. After 9/11 Giuliani certainly had the political capital to ask the city council to revoke term limits, but he did not do that, because he had more integrity than that. Bloomberg, who wouldn’t be mayor if it wasn’t for the term limits on Giuliani, ask the city council to remove them so he could run again. I think there are a lot of New Yorker who wish they never had term limits and Giuliani was still Mayor.

I think there a lot of Sarasotans who are wondering if there is a coherent thought in your post. Good thing neither Guiluani nor Bloomberg are running for Sarasota County Commissioner. The people voted in 1998 to impose term limits. Serve for two consecutive terms and then you must have a two year waiting period before you can serve again. That’s about all there is to say.

I like the way you use the word “serve” Ed. Do you think that possibly they serve themselves first?

Seems to me Bob Waechter was the jerk who put a couple of New College kids on the Democratic ticket to run when there was a chance the Democratic candidate was going to win. He hoped to split the Democrats vote. At the time, ole Bob
was serving as GOP Republican party chairman. A man who would play that type of
low, unethical trick when holding a responsible position is not to be trusted or
listened to on any political topic.

Scout – Which point are you making – That attendees and alumni of New College aren’t fit to run for office, or that young people aren’t fit to run for office? It is my belief that any and all people legally able to run for office should be allowed to be candidates. Apparently you don’t agree with that.

Scout, when did that happen – the New College kids being put on the ballot? Talk about doing whatever it takes.

Sounds like the Republican Party Of Sarasota County has some agenda items they have long term plans and/or favors to deliver for some “friends” and/or themselves.

People of History and the Present tells us what to DO:

All of Florida’s Taxpayers should not pay for any private sports corporation’s facilities.

The private sports corporations should not use intimidation to get the taxpayers to build them new corporations’ facilities. They signed the current contact(s) and should honor them.

The State, County and Cities Tax-Payers should not pay for a any corporations buildings and grounds. State of Florida Taxpayers’ dollars went into each stadium in Florida. ALL of the Florida’s citizens were NOT PERMITTED TO VOTE ON A STATE REFERENDUM FOR ANY STADIUMS and Facilities.

The MLB and NFL makes billions of dollars. They can afford it. The MLB, NHL and NFL teams could and should pay for their own stadiums and facilities. Their players are being pay 20 to 100 million each.

If Florida State tax-dollars, County tax-dollars and City tax-dollars are use to build private sports corporations buildings and grounds, plus the upkeeps and improvements. Then All the citizens of Florida should be able to vote FOR or AGAINST these projects in a State Referendum.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Most manicipalities request state, county, city taxpayers dollars for the private sports corporations’ buildings and grounds, plus upkeep and improvements. Then the municipalities must make requests to the Federal and/or State governments for subsidizing funds for the city infrastructure and services expenses (ie. Tampa Bucs Stadium).

What other private corporations have their business facilities paid for by the Florida taxpayers?

The state and/or county tax-dollars should not be subsidizing these municipalities’ infrastructure and services after they have commited their tax-dollars to a private sports corporation’s facilities/stadium.

This type of spending by the politicians is one reason why Florida has a deficit. We need to spend the tax-dollars on infrastructure and services; Schools, Police, Fire and EMS expenses and NOT on private sports corporation’s facilities/stadium.

The worst part is the politicians are going along with this arrangement.

 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The citizens of this Nation’s (Federal Funds), State and County are subsidizing these municipalities. Most of these sports
corporations leave it to the taxpayers to pay the standing debt.

All of Florida’s Taxpayers should not pay for each private sports corporation’s facilities. Especially when ALL of the Florida’s citizens were NOT PERMITTED TO VOTE ON A FLORIDA STATE REFERENDUM FOR ANY STADIUMS and FACILITIES.

Do the RAYS intend to help pay off the debt on the current stadium and facilities or are they just going to run off and leave the debt to the Florida taxpayers?

The best plan for St. Petersburg Mayor Bill Foster is to see that the Rays assist in paying off early the current Stadium and facilites, then the Rays should be released from their contract to find another site in Florida for a stadium and facilities at the Rays expense and NOT the Florida Taxpayers.http://dolfanjill.com:80/football-101/nfl-tax-records/nfl-stadium-cost-tax-payer-subsidies/?wpmp_switcher=mobile

All of Florida’s Taxpayers should not pay for any private sports corporation’s facilities in Florida.

Corporations are not Real Breathing People

Corporations may wish to be called ‘People’ or ‘Citizens’ and have special treatment, but they do not operate act like real breathing Citizens. Real breathing people/citizens of this nation, state, county or city supports their nation, state, county or city with their fare share of taxes for the infrastructure of their shared locality. Corporation where created so the real breathing people in corporations’ leadership or ownership can avoid taxes, liabilities, accountably and their fair share.

Now that these non-breathing non-real PEOPLE /corporations can legally buy with campaign donations (bribes) customized legislation in secrecy, this makes corporations in reality just “Fronts” for these breathing people’s lack of ethics, honesty and greed. This system results in corruption of our political system of government. Hiding these bribes for favoritism resulting in financial gains for the corporations and the politicians.

The real breathing PEOPLE/citizens pay their taxes and vote for a “qualified” representative. The citizens expect their representation have fiduciary responsibilities equally for all the citizens’ well-being and proper use of their taxpayers’ dollars with transparency.
